Dr. Smith is the Founder, President, and Principal Investigator of VRG/NOCCR, now AMR Knoxville and AMR New Orleans. He is the CEO of Alliance for Multispecialty Research, LLC (AMR) and its 32 locations across the US. Dr. Smith has been involved as a Principal Investigator for 40 years and conducted approximately 2,000 clinical research studies to include first-in-man, DDI, QTC, SAD/MAD, renal/hepatic disease, healthy volunteers, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, extensive vaccine studies, women’s health, men’s health, neurology, and tobacco studies including cessation. Dr. Smith is currently a Professor of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, previously having been in private practice in New Orleans and on the faculty of Tulane University School of Medicine. Following medical school graduation in 1974 he completed a clinical clerkship at Hahnemann Medical Center. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee, followed by Nephrology fellowship at Vanderbilt and a Cardiology fellowship at Tulane University Medical Center. He is board certified in Nephrology, Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Critical Care Medicine. Dr Smith is an active member of many professional societies such as American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, American Society of Critical Care, International Society of Nephrology, American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Association of Clinical Pharmacology Units and Society for Clinical Research Sites. Dr Smith has published over 150 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and is a frequent lecturer in the clinical research industry.
