Dr. Sonya Martin has over 21 years of clinical research experience. Most recently, she serves as the Northeast Director of Site Management and Monitoring in the US for Merck Research Laboratories (MRL). She holds a Doctorate in Public Health from Capella University which focused on the Assessment of behaviors and beliefs exhibited by African American practicing physicians toward clinical trial research. She holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Leadership/Clinical Research Administration from George Washington University, a Master of Medical Science degree from The University of South Florida and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Oakwood University. She is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, The American Public Health Association, and a certified clinical research professional with ACRP.
Throughout her career, Dr. Martin has sought to address the needs of people of color and find solutions to the lack of participation of minority populations in clinical trial research. She has worked as a research Biochemist and Lab Manager, conducting pre-clinical studies in the development of a medically functional liver-assist device using NASA technology, for which she and her team applied for two distinct patents. She has worked as a Clinical Research Associate at PPD (Thermo Fisher Scientific), KForce Clinical Research Staffing and PRA Health Sciences (ICON). She has also served as a Manager and Sr. Manager of Clinical Operations at ICON managing CRAs, Study Managers and Clinical Scientists and an Associate Director of Clinical Research at MRL.
Dr. Martin is married to Alex Martin and is a proud mom of her 19-year-old son.
